Solo exhibition, curated by Helen Cole.
Encounters was Vason’s first major exhibition presented at Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol (UK) in 2007, accompanied by the catalogue Encounters – Performance, photography, collaboration, edited by Dominic Johnson.
The exhibition comprised of 16 large size photographs included an interactive lighting system that was activated by the presence of the viewer.
While the room was lit by red light resembling a photographic dark room, the presence of a viewer triggered a spot light and activate each individual artwork creating a one-to-one encounter. The installation was also accompanied by the sound of the vibration of the artworks on the walls.
Each of the images presented constituted a performance for the camera and a ritualised gesture devised to be experienced as a single photograph and as an encounter between a performance artist practice and a viewer. During this intimate exchange the viewer was invited to interpret, co-create a narrative and imagine all the missing aspects of the event.
The Encounters exhibition was the result of an intense research on liveness, performance art and the potentiality of photography to stage a sense of durationality.
