The Unframing Photography project is a collaborative endeavour by transdisciplinary artist Manuel Vason, questioning the power and influence of photography in our life.

It proposes the photographic frame as an ideological apparatus of control which affects the way we see, memorise and relate with others.

Sparked from a collaboration with 10 lens-based artists in Folkestone (UK), Unframing Photography has unfolded into a series of public interventions, a number of large sculptures, an exhibition, a video documentary, a book and on-going discussion.

Collaborating lens-based artists and photographers: Aida Silvestri, Amy Johnson, Chelsey Browne, Clare Unsworth, Igor Emmerich, Jacqui Taylor, Lee Brodhurst-Hooper, Matt Rowe, Mick Williamson, and Thierry Bal.

Supported using public funding by Art Council of England.

What a delight it is to see Manuel Vason’s practice brought together in this volume. At a time when we all, arguably, have access to the apparatus of photography, the main principle of his practice – to breath pictures – connects us to the possibilities of an active dialogue beyond the photographic frame. In the process, Vason throws open questions not only for himself, but also to viewers, the context and photography’s multiple meanings in search of a new reflexive sensibility.

Sonia Boyce, artist, curator (in 2022 won the Venice Biennale's top Golden Lion price)

Manuel Vason takes photography to a whole new level, combining it with performance art, deep thinking and by being naked and unafraid. Unframing Photography is a deliciously layered, profoundly complex, provocative love poem to picture making, and it will inspire visual artists and scholars for decades to come.

Annie Sprinkle & Beth Stephens, artists.
